Ethics and Search Marketing
It’s an interesting dilemma: At what point do your personal beliefs interfere with what you do for a profession? We were joking about this the other day at work, ‘wouldn’t you like to be the person who ranked number one on the term ‘boobs?’ [As an aside, how often to you read the word, ‘boobs’ on a Search Marketing blog? I’m just saying…]
It got me thinking: there are times when you work for a client in which you may not *like* what they sell-simply for personal preference (ie I prefer lip-gloss to lipstick). But, what do you do if you work for a client in which you actually *take issue* with what they sell-or the content of their website? It’s not happened to me yet-and no judgement on those Search marketers who do work on these things-the work is very lucrative after all-but, I do wonder what will happen when that situation arises.
So, what about it? What would you do/have you done if faced with this dilemma? Did you take the work-and perhaps turn a blind eye or did you simply say, ‘thanks, but no thanks?’ Are there invisible lines in the sand in which there are certain um, products you’re OK to work on and others that you won’t go near?
I’d love to hear your opinion on this!
